In 1985, the UNESCO designated Kaziranga National Park as a World Heritage Site. It was initially a restricted forest in 1908; however it was later made into a wildlife sanctuary in 1950s. Due to poor wildlife preservation and protection of the place, Lord Curzon's wife Lady Baroness Mary Victoria Leiter Curzon was unable to observe any one-horned rhinos during her 1904 visit. Hence, it was her idea to regard the Kaziranga Forest as a reserve in order to safeguard animals and their natural habitat. Therefore, as a result The Kaziranga Reserve Park was established on 1st June, 1905.
